The Japanese Imperial Navy was the principal naval force of the Empire of Japan. Forming one of the military branches of the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces from 1868 to 1945, when it was dissolved following Japan's surrender in World War II. It was separate from the Japanese Imperial Army with whom they had a rivalry and also had their own air branch, the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service.
Indiana Jones came into conflict with their sailors and ships during the era of the Second Sino-Japanese War and wider World War II.
History[]
In 1936, Indiana Jones enlisted the services of Jock Lindsey and the G-CFO in so that he could take reconnaissance photos of an ancient, hidden temple in the Aleutian Islands. However, the surrounding waters had seen an increase in Japanese naval activity and a Takao-class cruiser didn't take kindly to the sudden appearance of an American-registered aircraft taking pictures. Their support craft, a technologically superior Kawanishi E7K2 intercepted the G-CFO to warn the Americans off but Jones needed more research and convinced Lindsey not to take the hint, confident that the Japanese wouldn't risk an international incident by downing a civilian plane. At least until his pilot pointed out that someone would need to be alive to report it. A lopsided dogfight broke out between the two planes, with the G-CFO unable to shoot back and the Japanese craft reinforced by the cruiser's guns. Aided by Lindsey's maneuvering, Jones came up with a plan and used the seaplane's reinforced anchor line to rip out the struts under the enemy craft's wings which sent the Kawanishi plummeting to the water below and allowed the Americans to escape. Unfortunately for Jones, the cruiser's commander, Kyoji Hiroto, was observing below with binoculars and the action allowed him the recognize the archaeologist from a similar encounter years earlier which prompted him to intervene in Jones's attempt to return to the island temple with the help of the Bantu Wind's crew.[1]
Legacy[]
- "Whoa! The War was not kind to that ship. Or anyone on board, I'm guessing."
- ―Indiana Jones upon seeing a wrecked Japanese ship in Palawan.[src]
In 1947, Indiana Jones traveled to Palawan in the Philippines to find Taklit's piece of the Infernal Machine. While there he encountered the remnants of the Japanese military presence in the country. He found a crashed Imperial Japanese ship along with a torpedo, which he used to create an entrance into the ship. He also found a downed Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" underwater and used to propeller blade from the plane as a makeshift pry bar to open the way into the Palawan Temple.[2]
