- "Do you know anything about guns? Every healthy young man loves guns."
- ―Sergeant DeMille[src]
Jean DeMille was a French sergeant from Cannes, who served in the 2nd Army under General Robert Nivelle at the Battle of Verdun during World War I. He was assigned to the artillery units, and enjoyed maintaining the smaller guns.
Biography[]
In September 1916, Sergeant DeMille was busy oiling a small artillery gun at his station near Verdun, and talking lovingly to the weapon, when a curious Belgian courier got too close, and caused DeMille to drop his oil can. DeMille introduced himself to Henri Defense (Indiana Jones) and showed Defense around the artillery area, including the massive rail-mounted howitzers. He also described the top German gun, Big Bertha and impressed on Defense how lethal it was. When Defense received the ammunition order from the area's commander, DeMille went back to his duties.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Patrick Floersheim played the role credited as Sergeant Jean in the episode "Verdun, September 1916" of the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, edited into Demons of Deception, though he mentions his full name: Jean DeMille.[1]
Thougth in the TV episode DeMille mentions that he is from Cannes,[1] the DVD subtitles list the place as Garonne.[2]
