Jeb was a character from Sam Magee's Ten Bullets to Tombstone.
He was taught by an old gunslinger to drop to the ground when being shot at due to a gunbarrel's tendency to kick upwards. The advice allowed him to later get the drop on Black Bart, making him catch "the first train to Boot Hill".
