Joseph Goebbels was the Nazi aide of Adolf Hitler and Minister for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda. His occult interests were rumored to use the prophecies of Nostradamus in his propaganda, and the use of herbs for spiritual purposes and animal magnetism.
Biography[]
At some point, Goebbels brought in Heinrich Himmler and his SS agents to assist in an operation without Hitler's knowledge to acquire an Imperial Fasces from the time of Julius Caesar to keep it out of the hands of Benito Mussolini.[3]
In 1936, US Intelligence Major Eaton supplied Indiana Jones with information on Goebbels as part of a document he thought the archaeologist should be aware of before Jones left to find the Ark of the Covenant.[1]
Two years later, in 1938, an article entitled "Goebbels Orders Book Burning" was printed to report on Goebbels' move to have books considered "un-German" incinerated in bonfires. It was collected by the son of René Emile Belloq, a former Nazi collaborator.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade actor Michael Byrne was told by the film's production team that the Nazi khaki suit Byrne's character Ernst Vogel wears was a design from Joseph Goebbels, created to be filmic from any angle, leading the actor to wonder if it was one of the first costumes created purely for the purposes of propaganda.[4]
