KMS Kummetz was a German B battleship of the Kriegsmarine that took part in Operation Großer Kreis under Nazi archaeologist Emmerich Voss although most of the crew were ignorant of the supernatural imperative of their mission.
History[]
Disappearance[]
In May 1937, KMS Kummetz was dispatched to South America to rendezvous with a Nazi expedition in Machu Picchu led by Third Reich Special Antiquities Collection archaeologist and Schutzstaffel (SS) major Emmerich Voss as part of Operation Großer Kreis. It was situated fifty kilometers off the coast of Lima, Peru with Doctor Laura Lombardi onboard alongside the Earthsplitter Relic recovered from the Incan site in Cusco. The battleship was part of a secret test to determine the artifact's power, with Voss observing the experiment on a nearby vessel. When Lombardi uttered the Adamic word inscribed on the stone, the entire ship teleported instantaneously into the sky over the Himalayas.[1]
The crew on the top deck were killed in the fall onto a Nepalese mountaintop while those who survived split off into different groups. Lost and ill-suited for the change in climate, one group embarked on a suicidal descent of the mountain and rather than rally together, those left behind came apart as another faction took over the mess hall. Konrad Altrichter, the ship's captain, obtained the relic from Dr. Lombardi, whose pre-existing reservations in meddling with unknown forces had become a determination to keeps its power away from Voss altogether, and locked himself on the bridge hoping he could duplicate the experiment to no success. Instead, all the survivors succumbed to the cold.[1]
Rediscovery[]
Laura Lombardi's frozen remains.
By October 1937, in Giza, Egypt, Emmerich Voss and his men received the distress call from the KMS Kummetz and Wehrmacht colonel Viktor Gantz volunteered to find the ship and the relic. However, Indiana Jones and Laura's sister Gina followed the trail of the Great Circle relics to the Himalayas and got there first, discovering the fate of the ship, its crew and Gina's sister.[1]
When a fight erupted between Gantz and Jones, a grenade explosion caused the ship to slide off the mountain. During the event, Jones and Gina had no other choice but to rely on the stone's power. A portal opened beneath the ship which dragged in pieces of the stricken vessel alongside Jones, Gina and Gantz and sent them to Shanghai under siege by the Japanese military.[1]
Legacy[]
On November 6, when Indiana Jones was incapacitated by frog poison in a temple in Sukhothai, Siam, part of the hallucination forced him to re-experience the discovery of Gina Lombardi's lifeless sister on board the KMS Kummetz. However, it was as an observer of his past self comforting Lombardi from behind a locked door at Marshall College, unable to do anything but proceed to find an exit from his compromised mindscape.[1]
A few days later, at the Ziggurat of Ur in Iraq, Emmerich Voss played Laura Lombardi's distress call from the ship, actually a defiant refusal to aid the Nazis any further, merely to taunt and draw Gina out of hiding, having left an unloaded gun idle while he confronted Jones.[1]
