Karl I of Austria was the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Biography[]
In 1917, Karl I received his brother-in-laws, princes Xavier and Sixtus of Bourbon-Parma, and French Intelligence officer Indiana Jones, to discuss a secret treaty with France and Great Britain that would end the Great War. At first Karl had doubts about signing the treaty and wavered before signing it. However his foreign minister, Count Czernin, had drafted a clever document that would allow the Austrians to deny knowledge of the treaty in the event that Germany became aware of it.[1]
Legacy[]
In 2004 the Pope beatified Karl I for his dedication to his faith and his people as well as his pursuit of peace during World War I.[2]
