The Khmer Vault, also known as the Explosion Site, was located in Sukhothai, Siam.
American archaeologist Indiana Jones investigated the structure which included the wall carving of a demon in 1937. Unlike many of the booby-trapped locales Jones visited throughout his career which were designed to stop intruders gaining access to the interior, the temple's elaborate obstacles were erected to stop its inhabitant getting out.
History[]
The Khmer people of Sukhothai, Siam once encountered a giant individual and, fearful that it was a supernatural being, killed the man and entombed him with the Idol of Yaksha. To prevent the "demon" from ever escaping, an extensive network of traps was constructed.[1]
Doctor Annika Lund eventually sought out the idol around 1937 when she found a reference to it at Angkor Wat. As part of Nazi archaeologist Emmerich Voss from the Third Reich Special Antiquities Collection's large-scale excavation of Sukhothai to uncover one of the stones from the Great Circle in November, Lund got trapped in the Khmer Vault ruins and was unexpectedly reunited with her old archaeology professor Indiana Jones.[1]
Jones, following up the explosion that Voss' Royal Italian Army allies had created to gain access to the site, had also become stranded. Together, he and Lund navigated the temple's dangers to reach the Idol of Yaksha and, uncomfortable with Lund's willing, seemingly naive, partnership with a Nazi, made sure she knew that it was her archaeological efforts that had allowed her to claim the artifact.[1]
Afterwards, they worked out an escape route but Jones' one-time student, bitter that her professor hadn't even remembered her and had snubbed a prior request for a reference, tricked Jones into a pit trap and left him for dead. On exiting with the idol, Lund dropped the relic and in trying to reach under a doorway to retrieve it, the barrier quickly came down on her.[1]
When Jones had caught up, he found the idol on the floor alongside Lund's severed arm. He took the artifact back to his local contact, Pailin Chaladphukhealom, and the last he had heard of Lund, she had been rushed away empty-handed by Italian soldiers for medical attention.[1]
