The Librarian worked at the Biblioteca di San Barnaba in Venice, Italy in the late 1930s.

Biography

One day near closing time in 1938, a librarian of Biblioteca di San Barnaba was working at his desk, stamping books. Several times as he stamped the books, the stamp made a large metallic sound, much more than would be expected from a tiny inkstamp. Puzzled, he set his stamp down.[1]

Unbeknownst to him at the time, Indiana Jones was using a metal cordon post to smash a hole in the marble floor elsewhere in the library, striking at the same time as the librarian was stamping his books.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Librarian was played uncredited by the late Albert Evansky in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in his final film role. The character appeared in a non-speaking role.

The Librarian's scene in which he confuses the sounds of his stamp and Indiana Jones' metal cordon post was a reference to the scene in which the tunnelers do the same to mask the sound of their digging in John Sturges' film The Great Escape.

The Librarian appears only the consoles versions of the LEGO video games. In LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, he is a non-playable character and appears when the player comes to the Marshall College library to buy characters. In the sequel, despite most of the Venice scene being omitted, the Librarian is available as a playable character.
