The Lost River Delta was a location in Cusco, Peru.

History[]

The Lost River Delta was a region of wetlands in Peru once inhabited by one or more Mesoamerican cultures which built a variety of structures in the area. Among these were the step pyramid known as Temple of the Crystal Skull and another, unidentified temple dedicated to fire and water spirits. The Crystal Skull site housed a spirit with plasma powers and a manifestation of the serpent god Quetzalcoatl who, at least according to legend, protected the Fountain of Youth hidden within.

In the year 1883, the delta was visited by the wealthy adventurer Harrison Hightower III of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. Hightower desecrated the temple of the fire and water spirits by stealing the head of water-god statue. Hightower and his loyal manservant Archibald "Archie" Smelding returned with it to their home in the Hotel Hightower of New York City.[1]

In 1931, Indiana Jones travelled to the Lost River Delta aboard Piranha Aviation's UBF-2 sea-plane C-3PO. Jones went to the Delta with only half of a map revealing the Temple of the Crystal Skull's location. The other half of the map was held by an explorers guild known as the League of Adventurers which was also seeking out the temple. United by their common interests, Jones and the League joined forces in order to successfully track down the temple. However, the League of Adventurers was driven away by the Crystal Skull, leaving only Dr. Jones and his loyal assistant Paco to continue their work at the site.

Around the time of Jones and Paco's excavation, the Hightower Trust teamed up with the Cantera El Barranca Rocoso excavation group to restore the nearby temple which Hightower had looted years earlier. Their efforts disrupted the temple even further, however, as they positioned the heads of the water and fire gods in such a way that they faced one another, upsetting the spirits into summoning natural disasters to the area.[2]

Jones eventually went missing within the Temple of the Crystal Skull, leaving Paco to head the excavation which turned to hosting tours to encourage additional revenue. One of the tours entered the Crystal Skull spirit's chamber only for it to try and destroy the trespassers. The group was saved by the timely arrival of Dr. Jones and found themselves evading booby-traps, and the wrath of Quetzalcoatl and the Crystal Skull through their flight of the temple and managed to escape.[3]
