The Lotus Eaters was a posh nightclub. It was one of several clubs owned by Shanghai-based crimelord, Lao Che, who also owned Club Obi Wan.[1]

In 1933, Indiana Jones first met Lao Che and his sons at the club and feigned interest in buying one of the funeral urns on display for a museum to recover the ashes of Wu Han's family.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

While lotuses are known in China (and used in Chinese medicine), the club's name "Lotus Eaters" is a reference to Greek mythology. Odysseus encountered a group of people who were described as Lotus Eaters, as the primary foodstuff they consumed was the fruit and juice of the narcotic lotus plant, which left the inhabitants sleeping in peaceful apathy.
