"Our goal is to preserve, protect, and document these pieces by the same standards used by museum curators."
Deborah Fine, former Lucasfilm Director of Research and Archives.[src] The Lucasfilm Archives make up a large facility at Skywalker Ranch designed to preserve and document items from Lucasfilm Ltd. productions which includes the Indiana Jones series.[1]

History

Although pieces from the original Star Wars trilogy had been stored in a variety of locations during their production, it was shortly before the 1983 release of Return of Jedi when a vast collection of models and miniatures were brought together at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for a publicity shot of George Lucas stood amongst it all that the filmmaker realized there was a need to preserve the pieces.[1]

Joined at the shoot by his researcher Deborah Fine, Lucas put her in charge of archiving each piece, cataloging and photographing the items and by November 1991, an environmentally controlled building had been constructed for artifacts from Lucasfilm productions along with a film vault.[1]
