Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte (German: German Air Combat Forces)—known before October 1916 as Die Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches (The Imperial German Air Service, lit “The flying troops of the German Kaiser’s Reich”)—was the air arm of the Imperial German Army. In English-language sources it is usually referred to as the Imperial German Air Service. It was founded in 1910. They often used foreign aircraft designers like Anthony Fokker and Villehad Forssman.
Indiana Jones had a few encounters with the Luftstreitkräfte throughout his service in World War I.
Adventures against the Luftstreitkräfte[]
In September 1916, Indy was chased by Herman Göring's biplane while attempting to deliver a message between the front lines during the Battle of Verdun. While Göring was able to knock Indy off his motorcycle, he did not finish the job as it believed he had already killed Indy. He did not.[1]
In November 1916, Indy would encounter another plane, Margaret Trappe's biplane, which was able to damage an Air balloon Indy and Remy were using to transport Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck as a prisoner to the Belgian lines. It was encountered again, this time saving the trio from a Hostile African tribe and being used to take von Lettow back to German East Africa.[2]
In early 1917, Indy would fly with the 124th Squadron, battling with many Albatros D.III biplanes and Fokker Dr.I triplanes. He, at one point, took a photograph of famous German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen getting shot down. He got to meet him and his brother at one point in the war in person while he was being held prisoner. Indy would also destroy a Luftstreitkräfte secret weapon, the Pohl Giant Triplane at Ahlhorn Naval Base.[3]
By 1939, the Nazi Luftwaffe were still using World War I-era biplanes. Indy flew in one to escape German Desert Commandos in Sudan.[4] He and his father also flew in one together in South America to stop the Nazi Zeppelin D-LZ 127 from stealing Mayan Artifacts.[5]
