Main Street was a thoroughfare which ran through Bedford, Connecticut.

History

In 1957, during the Red Scare, an anti-Communist protest march moved down Main Street. Indiana Jones and Mutt Williams eventually encountered the demonstration on the quad of Marshall College while evading KGB agents.

Behind the scenes

"Main Street" is a common name that can literally identify the principal thoroughfare of a settlement or, because of its ubiquity in Western civilization, be a metonym for a street that goes by another name but fulfills the same function. The Main Street of Bedford is mentioned in the young adult adaptation of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Whether or not it actually appears in the book (or indeed the movie itself) is unclear as the geography of the motorcycle chase was changed by the final cut of the film.

In writer David Koepp's screenplay, from which the novel is adapted, after exiting the library on motorcycle, Indiana Jones and Mutt Williams drive through the anti-Communist demonstration which is happening in the town center then through Marshall College's football stadium during a game before the KGB car pursuing them crashes into the statue of Marcus Brody situated away from the protest. By the final film, the stadium was dropped and the student protest, now on a campus quad, is the direct cause of the car crashing into the statue. The geography of the roads is further complicated by the set-dressing outside Arnie's Diner, where the chase sequence begins, indicating that it is situated on the corner of West Main and a side street, and it is not evident whether or not West Main is the western part of Main Street, simply connects to it from that direction or lies nearby.
