Sister María was a nun that worked in the Nazca sanatorium dedicated to Saint Anthony de Padua in Peru in 1957.

Biography[]

In 1957, when American archaeologist Indiana Jones and his son Mutt Williams arrived at the Saint Anthony de Padua sanatorium looking for former patient Harold Oxley, María explained the circumstances of his departure, and guided the pair to Oxley's room where Jones's friend had vandalized the walls with drawings.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Sister María, credited as the "Sanatorium Nun", was played by actress and modelling agent Maria Luisa Minelli in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.[1] The character has the distinction of being Minelli's only credited feature film role to date.[3]

In the concept art of Nathan Schroeder, Sister María was depicted in white attire similar to that worn by convent nuns rather than the black she wore in the finished film.[4]

In LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues, María (as the "Peru Nurse"), instead of guiding Indy and Mutt to Harold Oxley's cell simply walks out and closes the door behind her, forcing Indy and Mutt to break the window of Oxley's cell to escape from the ill inmates.[5]
