Mara was a deity.
The Temple of the Forbidden Eye in India was dedicated to Mara. Legends promised riches, eternal youth or future knowledge as rewards to those who entered, so long as travelers did not look into the eyes of Mara.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Mara was originally voiced by James Earl Jones in Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye but was temporarily replaced with new vocals by Neil Patrick Harris during a special effects update to the attraction. Jones' voice has since been added back in.[1]
It's unclear how much, if any, of the Mara character is derived from real-world mythology and folklore. Figures named Mara appear in both Buddhism and Hinduism, as a demonic entity in the former and a goddess in the latter. Both are associated with death though variations of the demon Mara are also tied to greed and seduction.
