Mara was a deity.
The Temple of the Forbidden Eye in India was dedicated to Mara. Legends promised riches, eternal youth or future knowledge as rewards to those who entered, so long as travelers did not look into the eyes of Mara.

Mara was originally voiced by James Earl Jones in Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye but was temporarily replaced with new vocals during a special effects update to the attraction. James Earl Jones' voice has since been added back in.
