Marco Polo was an explorer during the Middle Ages.
Biography[]
In 1271, Marco Polo left Venice with his uncles for a trading expedition to China, met and worked with the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan before returning home in 1295.[1]
In his writings, Polo claimed that the legendary Prester John had died before the blade of Genghis Khan in the thirteenth century.[2]
Legacy[]
The Travels of Marco Polo was the main European source of information on China for centuries.[1]
Cut off from his medieval sources in Europe due to World War I, Professor Henry Jones traveled to China in 1914 hoping to find mentions of Marco Polo in imperial records.[1] In 1933, Tzen Khan met Indiana Jones and suggested that the archaeologist could be a reincarnation of Polo.[3]
