General Masashi Kyojo was a commanding officer in the Japanese Imperial Army. In late 1938, upon becoming aware of the Covenant of Buddha's existence, Kyojo assembled his troops in an attempt to find the Covenant, claim its treasure and use it for Japan's operations over Asia.

Biography[]

In October 1938, General Masashi Kyojo was approached at the Japanese Embassy in Delhi, India by a South African archaeologist Theo Van Aaken, who informed the general that his American rival Indiana Jones was in search of Covenant of Buddha. Persuaded by Van Aaken, Kyojo believed that he could claim the Covenant and its treasure for Japan, which could greatly aid Japan's "friendly" mission in Asia. Once aware that the unscrupulous hadn't told anyone about this, Kyojo shot Van Aaken in the neck, killing him, before ordering one of his soldiers to assemble a special expedition.[1]

Kyojo and his troops track down the bandits that assaulted Jones and his friends on a train to Afghanistan by blasting projectiles at them with his heavy weaponry to announce his presence, forcing the bandits to retreat. They then went after the train the bandits attacked, leading his troops to massacre all of Doctor Patar Kali's men, thanks to a Sherpa spy within them working for Kyojo's troops, with only Sonam Tashi and a few surviving. Kyojo then assigns Sergeant Itaki to kill Jones, in case he should get in their way. As Itaki went after Jones, Kyojo then threatened his sanskrit experts to decipher some of Gautama Buddha's ancient writings or otherwise they would be forced to commit suicide through the "Hara-Kiri".[1]

Itaki and the rest of Kyojo's men attempted to kill Jones at the Colossus of Bamian, but Kyojo realized the archaeologist could be useful in leading him to the Covenant, after his own sanskrit experts failed him. Instead, he directed a sniper to shoot Itaki, seconds before the sergeant could finish off Jones, and forces his three experts to commit "Hara-Kiri" for their failure.[1]

Kyojo confronted Jones once again in a zone full of Szechuan, China's rocky mountains. By this point, Indiana and his party were now being aided by a small army of Chinese rebels led by General Serpent Lady, who repelled Kyojo's forces after denying to hand Jones over, who in turn were ordered to hold back on their fire as they needed Jones alive. Kyojo thus left two snipers on the ravines to make sure no one but Jones would cross it, but the archaeologist and the rebel general quickly deduced the tactic and dispatched the snipers before proceeding to bomb out the following ravine, sealing it and separate Kyojo from his troops, who were all buried alive by the destroyed rocks. Angry at the loss of his forces, Kyojo swore to get back at Jones and the Serpent Lady.[1]

Knowing that Jones and Serpent Lady were planning to board a train headed for Hankow, Nanking, Kyojo and his men drove to there first and prepared to capture Jones and company at the train station, with the aid of Colonel Watanabe's forces. Only then did he learn that Jones had got off the train before it reached its intended destination. With no time to lose, Kyojo and his forces follow Jones and his party to the town where Ch'ao the Red and his men are holding them hostages, so Kyojo orders the whole town to be airbombed, unaware that Jones and his allies were escaping from the town with an unguarded jeep, sending an armored car after them.[1]

Kyojo located the temple where the Covenant was located regardless, but was met by Indiana Jones and Patar Kali as Sophia Hapgood, the Serpent Lady and Khamal distracted his men. Kyojo tried to shoot Jones, but ricocheted and hit Kali instead, albeit non-fatally. Jones tackled him, but Kyojo slammed Jones against the wall. Kyojo pulled out his katana, but before he could strike a killing blow, the archaeologist kicked him in the stomach and the general was knocked unconscious with a punch to the face.[1]

Ironically, where the unconscious Kyojo dropped his kata was were the Covenant of Buddha was hidden under, but Indy and Kali weren't able to appreciate it for long. Afterwards, an earthquake hit the temple and the Covenant disintegrated in the process. Jones attempted to drag Kyojo's body out with him, but the general was crushed by a falling statue of Buddha.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Masashi Kyojo was a cruel and sadistic man who enjoyed to unleash carnage over both his enemies and his own men. If displeased by his soldiers, Kyojo would force them to commit "Hara-Kiri" with no qualms for failing him for the smallest of reasons, like the three sanskrit experts who weren't able to decipher Gautama Buddha's ancient writings. He wasn't above murdering his own men if it suited him, like when he had his Sergeant Itaki shot dead despite him doing what he was ordered to just due to his target Indiana Jones still being useful to their plans.[1]

Kyojo also had some kind of messiah complex, as his desire to get the Covenant of Buddha veered more into making all of Asia loyal to him as their new messiah instead of using it for his native Japan. He was also a racist, referring to Theo Van Aaken as an "Occidental Vermin", to the bandits as "barbarians" and to Indiana Jones as a "spineless, decadent Yankee", whom he tried to behead with his katana and taunted that he would die first and then all American heads would follow his.[1]
