Merlin's Scabbard was the deerskin suede sheath of the flaming blade of legend Caliburn. Imbued with healing powers by the wizard Merlin, the scabbard's abilities only worked for the one who wielded Caliburn in battle.
Caliburn and its scabbard eventually fell into the possession of the English St. Brendan family of the New Forest. To better compensate for the conditional healing of the relic – Caliburn's swordsman could simply be too badly injured to reach the scabbard – Caitlin St. Brendan and her mother Athena had it carefully stripped down and sewn into a garment that could be worn instead. Indiana Jones praised the ingenuity behind the idea when he learned of what had become of the scabbard in 1930.
