Mithras was the patron deity of a Roman mystery religion.

Biography[]

Legend[]

According to legend, Mithras was born from a rock not as a baby but a grown youth.[1]

Legacy[]

Over time, the Cult of Mithras–who revered a trio of giants that came to Rome during the 1st century AD–came to believe that Emperor Nero's undefeated gladiatorial champion Abgal, one of the three arrivals alongside Junia and Gibborim, whose face was concealed by a Minotaur-like helmet, was the Mithraic bull whose sacrifice would summon their god.[1]

Centuries later, around 1937, a Vatican City priest named Orlando Ricci tried to resurrect the cult, his interest in Roman esotericism having morphed into fanaticism. He thought reaching and slaying the bull would a grant him an audience with Mithras who would bestow enlightenment. However, the passage of time had reduced knowledge of what truly lay beyond the Monster's Gate beneath the Italian capital to mere fragments.[1]

On October 23, Ricci tricked archaeologist Indiana Jones into bypassing the protections on the chamber. Although Jones survived the encounter, Ricci roused Abgal from his slumber and was crushed in the Nephilim giant's bare hands.[1]
