Nagasaki is a Japanese city located on the nation's third largest island Kyushu, located in the southwest part of the country. Captain Snark came from Nagasaki, and the family of Yamada Hajime was living there around 1943. During World War II, the city was a major seaport and industrial center, focusing on the manufacture of ships and ordnance.
On August 9, 1945 — three days after the first was dropped on Hiroshima — the city was hit by an atomic bomb codenamed "Fat Man". Half of Nagasaki was destroyed and 70,000 were killed, prompting Emperor Hirohito to inform the Allies of his wish to surrender bringing about the end of World War II.
