Nalca was a drink used by the inhabitants of the interior world as a way of preventing the ill effects of moving back and forth between the outer and inner worlds. It was prepared from the eggs of a prehistoric fish, which spawned in the waters near ChiloƩ. The substance in the fish that kept them from freezing in Antarctic waters negated the health risks of passing through the portals. If a person did not take a swallow of nalca when passing through a portal and for few days after, their body would quickly dry out and disintegrate. Nalca was also sometimes used as an aphrodisiac.[1]
In 1929, Indiana Jones was given nalca by Salandra after he was taken aboard the Caleuche from the outer world to Pinchoya. He and others continued to take it as they continued to travel back and forth.[1]
After Jones' adventures in the interior world, Marcus Brody revealed that nalca was also the name of a prickly plant that grew around ChiloƩ, and the nalca Jones encountered was just part of a drug-induced dream.[1]
