Nicole was a French woman, married to Michel, a soldier serving during World War I.

Biography[]

During World War I, Nicole lived in Marseilles. Her husband, Michel, carried a small box of personal possessions, including a photograph of her, when he was involved in the Battle of Verdun.[1]

In September 1916, her husband, recognizing his own likely mortality in battle, opened his box, and showed a young courier her picture, explaining that the box was to be sent to her. The courier took the box, though claiming that he couldn't accept it, and Nicole's husband rushed out in an infantry charge out of the trenches across no man's land.[1]

Two days later, the courier recalled a mental image of the older soldier handing him Nicole's image and remembered the men at the front dying in battle. He used that as moral justification for destroying new orders to attack the fort, which would have resulted in their slaughter from increased German arms.[1]

During his staying in Paris, Indy managed to find Nicole and gave her Michel's box.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The role of Nicole in the photograph in the episode "Verdun, September 1916" of the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is not credited.

While Nicole's residence is established as being in Marseilles in the TV episode,[1] The Mata Hari Affair lists her location as Paris where she is named Nicole de Mourney and married to Marcel de Mourney, a soldier of around nineteen. The book includes a scene in which Jones delivers the box to her Parisian home.[2]

In the comic adaptation Nicole's photo depicts her alongside two children.[3] The two of whom appear in The Mata Hari Affair.[2]
