Nicole was a French woman, married to Michel, a soldier serving during World War I.
Biography[]
Michel holds up a picture of Nicole.
During World War I, Nicole lived in Marseilles[2] and they had two children, one of whom likely was born while Michel was at the front.[3]
Her husband, Michel, carried a small box of personal possessions, including a photograph of her, when he was involved in the Battle of Verdun. In September 1916, her husband, recognizing his own likely mortality in battle, opened his box, and showed a young courier, Indiana Jones, her picture, explaining that the box was to be sent to her.[2] Michel died shortly after in the attack[4] and she would be later notified of his death.[3] Two days later, Jones recalled a mental image of the soldier handing him Nicole's image and remembered the men at the front dying in battle. He used that as moral justification for destroying new orders to attack the fort, which would have resulted in their slaughter from increased German arms.[2]
The following month, during his staying in Paris,[5] Indy managed to find Nicole and gave her Michel's box. When she asked him if he had known Marcel well, he told her that they'd only met for a moment. She didn't ask about how he had died and, before departing, she asked how much the ring in the box would had fetched.[3]
Personality and traits[]
Nicole was a slight, dark-haired girl who had pretty features beneath evident fatigue.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
The role of Nicole in the photograph in the episode "Verdun, September 1916" of the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is not credited.
Continuity[]
The photo of Nicole in the comic adaptation.
While Nicole's residence is established as being in Marseilles in the TV episode,[2] The Mata Hari Affair lists her location as Paris where she is named Nicole de Mourney and married to Marcel de Mourney, a soldier of around nineteen. The book includes a scene in which Jones delivers the box to her Parisian home.[3]
In the comic adaptation Nicole's photo depicts her alongside two children.[6] The two of whom appear in The Mata Hari Affair.[3] In The Day of Destiny the photo shows Nicole sitting on the harbour wall of a Mediterranean town, presumably Marseilles.[7]
In The Day of Destiny Michel states that he and Nicole were married by a year and that they were expecting their first child in January.[7] This doesn't jibe with the fact they have already children in other adaptations.[3][6]
