Behind the scenesEdit
The plane's registration OB-CPO is an inside joke aimed at Star Wars fans ("OB" refers to Obi-Wan Kenobi and "CPO" refers to C-3PO). Nods to the Lucasfilm Ltd. sci-fi franchise would continue in subsequent Indiana Jones works. The "OB-CPO" name was also included in the LEGO Indiana Jones set "Temple Escape!". The "OB-" prefix does actually denote a plane registered in Peru after 1928 but the trailing letters do not follow Peruvian registration conventions.
The real life aircraft that was used in Raiders of the Lost Ark was a Waco Aircraft Company UBF-2. The plane sits on display near the Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull theme park attraction at Disneyland Tokyo.
At some point during the 1990s, a Raiders playset prototype was presented to the Galoob Micro Machines company with the hope of turning it into an actual set. It represented two sections from the film, Peru and Egypt, with the OB-CPO present in the former. The set, however, did not get approval and went unproduced.
