Odessa was a major seaport city in southern Russia, (modern dayUkraine), on the Black Sea. While different settlements had existed on the site since ancient Greek times, the modern town was not founded until 1794. In the nineteenth century, it was the fourth largest city in the Russian Empire, with a large population of many European ethnic groups, giving it a cosmopolitan culture. In 1905, Odessa experienced a worker's uprising and mutiny aboard a Russian battleship, which helped to sow seeds for the later Russian Revolution.
In 1910, young Indiana Jones, his parents Henry and Anna, and his tutor Helen Seymour finished their rail journey through Russia, after traveled from Moscow all the way to Odessa, where they boarded a passenger steam ship for Athens, Greece via Constantinople and Thessalonki.
