The Omphalos was an ancient, bullet-shaped meteorite which provided visions of the future to those who held it.
The stone artifact was considered to be at the heart of the Oracle at Delphi and was thought to mark the Earth's "navel", the translation of the word in Greek.
History[]
According to one ancient account, a meteorite struck the earth in front of Merlin during his travels. He eventually saw it buried in Delphi, Greece where it took on the name Ompahlos.[2]
Indiana Jones later uncovered the Omphalos in 1922.[1] After saving the King of Greece from an assassination conspiracy, he showed the Omphalos. The King remarked it it is high time for Greece to join the rest of the world in their ways; "Greece needs to start looking to her future, and stop living in the past", and rewarded Jones with the meteorite. While returning to the United States via ocean liner, Jones was unsure what to do with the stone, tempting himself to throw it overboard after all the trouble it had given him. However, he remembered a colleague and it may make a good museum piece.
Behind the scenes[]
Multiple omphaloi exist in the real world. A larger example of the bullet-shaped omphalos that Indiana Jones found is on display in Delphi.
