Parsifal was an opera written by Richard Wagner. Opened in 1882,[1] it was based on Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival about the Holy Grail.
Henry Walton Jones, Senior, professor of medieval literature and Grail lore hobbyist, made his son Indiana study the opera as a teenager after requiring his reading of Eschenbach's work in both English and early German. Henry promised a reward for his son, who found the stories difficult, for when he completely understood them. However, to Indiana's dismay, the reward turned out to be Arthurian Grail legends.[2]
