The Periscope Soldier was among the German crewmen on the Hatay tank during the journey to the Grail Temple in 1938 as part of the Nazi effort to find the Holy Grail.
Biography[]
In 1938, uring the fight on top of the Mark VII Tank between Indiana Jones and Colonel Ernst Vogel, the Periscope Soldier heard the commotion and raised a periscope to examine the situation. What he saw was Jones's face slammed into the periscope. Amused, he turned to his crewmates and said in German, "The Americans...they fight like girls!" Apparently hearing this offensive remark, Indiana kicked the periscope; the handle swung violently around and hit the trooper across the head. Later, after Indy had defeated Vogel, the soldier's unconscious body was carried over the cliff when the tank fell, killing him in the process.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The Periscope Soldier was portrayed by the uncredited stunt performer Nick Gillard in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[1] Gillard had previously worked as stuntman in George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy and later went on to work as the swordmaster and fight scene choreographer in the prequel trilogy.
Although the Periscope Soldier's rank is never mentioned in the film, his uniform epaulettes indicate that he is a Lieutenant. However, it's not clear if he is a Lieutenant or a Second Lieutenant.[1]
In the comic book adaptation by Marvel Comics, the Periscope Soldier is absent, so the periscope scene is ommitted. In addition, the second tank crewman seems to be the only Nazi soldier aboard the Mark VII Tank alongside Colonel Ernst Vogel.[2]
The Periscope Soldier, along with the tank's crew, is absent from LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures and its sequel. Instead, Vogel controls the entire tank himself.[3][4]
