The Pincoyans were the people of Pincoya, an island kingdom of the interior world. Like others of the interior world, Pincoyan people had different magical abilities.
Appearance[]
Pincoyans varied in stature, features and skin color.[1]
Pincoyan guards tended to be long-haired men who wore tunics and leggings that shimmered like silvery fish scales.[1]
Culture[]
The Pincoyans had their own language and culture. Their level of technology akin to medieval world. The Pincoyans had carved their city of Pincoya out of the mountain that formed the island, building towers, spires, and a great plaza containing a waterfall to Minhocoa and statues of half-human half-animal figures. Not fearing invasion, their city did not include any fortifications.[1]
In ancient times, Pincoyans would sacrifice people to Minhocoa by putting them into the pool, and they would go down the waterfall, believed to be the snake's mouth.[1]
As an island people, they built ships, some of which, like the Caleuche could travel through sea gates to the outer world. They often did this in order to harvest the fish eggs needed for producing nalca.[1]
Since firearms could not exist in the interior world, Pincoyan security forces were armed with dart crossbows.[1]
The Pincoyan use of gates to the outer world was regulated by the United Council.[1]
History[]
For hundreds of years, Pincoyans regularly traveled by ship to the outerworld near Chiloé Island, Chile to harvest the prehistoric-looking cold-water fish whose eggs formed the basis for nalca. The Pincoyans would sometimes kidnap locals to work on their boats for years. Some of the people kidnapped in this way were Teotoro and Hans Beitelheimer. They would also force locals like Antonioto give up their houses, for a few days to allow the Pincoyans to use them for fish egg processing. This led to the people of Chiloé believing that there was an evil ghost ship which they called the Caleuche.[1]
At one time, King Vicard had advised the United Council to punish the Wayuans after their leader, Maleiwa's father broke rules regarding gate travel and connecting with Samuel Mathers of the Golden Dawn on the surface.[1]
Years later, Vicard would send his daughter, Salandra, to the surface world on various missions including nalca harvesting and intelligence gathering. Suspicious of Maleiwa, he sent her to spy on his actions, including when the Wayuan obtained the alicorn in 1928. Maleiwa also got some Pincoyans, like Sacho, to steal nalca shipments for him.[1]
While Salandra was out in the outer world, Maleiwa took control of Pincoya and drove King Vicard into exile at Roraima. Pincoyan guards loyal to him captured Salandra and Indiana Jones as they arrived in June 1929 and imprisoned the two. Days later, a Pincoyan guard still loyal to Vicard helped free the princess and Jones, and aided in their escape into Minhocoa.[1]
In September, other loyal guards met up with Vicard, Salandra, and Jones on the trail down the barren tepui near the Roraima border with Wayua. These men then escorted their rulers to the Wayua grasslands, where Wayuan horsemen pursued them back into Swampland. Several guardsmen died in the skirmish, buying their king time to escape. The remaining Pincoyan guards were picked off by the dangers of the swamp, including by a dragon and a cannibalistic giant. However, the king and Salandra escaped and were able to reunite with Jones before catching up to Maleiwa. In that battle, Vicard was gravely wounded and Salandra stayed to heal him.[1]
When Jones decided to tell the surface world of the interior world's existence, Marcus Brody stopped him, and pointed out that Pincoya was the name of a creature in Chiloé mythology, akin to a mermaid, but with legs and not flippers. These matched the description of the Pincoyan guard.[1]
