Poltava was a city in southern Russia, (modern day northeast Ukraine), less than 100 miles southwest of Karkov. The city dates back to the medieval period. It was on the rail line between Karkov and Odessa.

In 1910, young Indiana Jones, his parents Henry and Anna, and his tutor Helen Seymour passed through Poltava on the rail line, after passing through Karkov on their way from Kuntsevo to Greece.
