Sir Richard Francis Burton was a Victorian era explorer, adventurer and linguist who had many travels in the Orient. He kept journals with his finding and had a confidant known as Sir A.D..

The fringe-eared oryx was also known as Burton's oryx.[1]

Biography[]

During one of his travels, Burton met a Moor who had traveled eastward from the city (perhaps Iskenderun) and saw the Holy Grail.[2]

In 1867, Burton was last to see the lost city of Cozán in British Honduras before the arrival of Indiana Jones,[3] actually one of his idolizers,[4] and his guide Bernabé in 1933. Upon seeing Cozán, Jones noted that while Burton had got out of the city, Burton's best frined Tobias did not.[3]

Upon Burton's death, Lady Burton burnt his journals, considering them lascivious and obscene. However, A.D. salvaged some.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

To play Henry Walton Jones, Senior in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the late Sir Sean Connery inspired himself on Richard Francis Burton to evoke the feeling that the older Jones was a both an academic and active man whose genes produced the franchise's title character while still making him a Victorian father.[5]
