Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's second largest city and the former capital.
Famous as a tourist destination, the city was originally founded by French Huguenots in the the 16th century, and was later claimed by Portugal. "Rio de Janeiro" means river of January, so named because it was discovered in January of 1502 by Amerigo Vespucci and Andre Goncalves. For many years, Rio was the only port through which gold could be brought to the South American coast for sale.
