Rough Rider was a member of a grave robbing gang led by Fedora, which recovered the Cross of Coronado from a Utah canyon in 1912.
Biography[]
After Indiana Jones stole the Cross of Coronado, Rough Rider chased Indy and fought him on the circus train. During the fight, Rough Rider and Half Breed followed Indy into the reptile car and got momentarily trapped. Rough Rider used his pistol to unlock the train car door, and later pulled his gun on Indy after helping to hoist him out of the lion car.[1]
Rough Rider later appeared at the Joneses household when Garth reclaimed the Cross with police assistance.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Much like the rest of the gang and unlike his boss Garth, Rough Rider wasn't above threatening lethal force on anyone that inconvenienced them, as he drew his gun on a teenage Indiana Jones for stealing the Cross of Coronado from them just after pulling him out from a lion despite Garth's insistence to not harm him.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Rough Rider was portrayed by the late Vince Deadrick Sr. in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[1] The script and movie credits refer to the character as Rough Rider, though the character's actual name is not revealed. In Ryder Windham's junior novelization of the film, Fedora refers to one of his men as Alfred, though it's unclear whether he is talking to Rough Rider or Half Breed.[2]
During the development of the film's script, written by Jeffrey Boam, during the prologue sequence, Rough Rider was originally going to be attacked by a Bengal tiger which struck him from behind, ripping his jacket and causing him to fall from the circus train.[3]
When young Indy is pulled out of the lion car, Rough Rider has a gun pointed at him. The next scene quickly shifts and his gun is down, with Garth's hand on it.[1] Windham's junior novel states Garth grabbed the revolver's barrel and forced it down the moment Rough Rider drew it towards Indy.[2]
In LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, Rough Rider fills the role of Fedora's truck driver in the film.[4] With the whole Young Indy sequence omitted from the sequel, Rough Rider is absent.[5]
