Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet and novelist. He was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Biography[]

One of Rudyard Kipling's poems "The White Man's Burden" was written to encourage US colonization of the Philippines in the wake of the Spanish-American War.[1]

Kipling also wrote "Gunga Din".[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Rudyard Kipling wrote the poem "Gunga Din", which inspired George Stevens' 1939 film of the same name, that in turn influenced Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

In the LucasArts video game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Kipling is mentioned by Omar Al-Jabbar on the Team Path when he sells a red wagon that belonged to Kipling to Indiana Jones.[3]

The Iconic Props featurette for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull shows that Indiana Jones has volume of Kipling's work on a bookshelf.[4]

The Indiana Jones Handbook credits Kipling as using the Thuggee as antagonists for "Gunga Din".[2] However, this aspect was an invention for the movie adaptation.
