Schwammerin Gebacken was a Bavarian dish that included mushrooms.

Elsa Schneider's grandmother used to cook a little Schwammerin Gebacken for dinner if not a nice Zwiebelrostbraten, as her granddaughter recalled to American archaeologist Indiana Jones as they prepared to break into Castle Grunwald in 1938.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The mention of Schwammerin Gebacken was originally part of the third revision of Jeffrey Boam's script for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[1] Although Tom Stoppard retained many of Boam's ideas in the final script, the mention of Schwammerin Gebacken didn't make it into the shooting script.[2]
