Schweitzer Falls was a location studied by Marshall College and visited by Jock Lindsey.
History[]
Schweitzer Falls was a rock formation and waterfall located in the jungles along the Nile River in North Africa. The Falls contained a notable feature known as "The Backside of Water".
On the August 12 of 1891, the landmrk was discovered and named by adventurer Dr. Albert Falls. The discovery of the site was made official by Falls' contemporaries in the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, namely via the senior member Luana Teixeira. In the 1930s, Albert's granddaughter Alberta Falls ran a riverboat jungle tour service called "The Jungle Cruise" which often passed under the falls as one of its exotic locales.[1]
Around 1938, a sample of water taken from the backside of the falls was placed in a barrel and sent on to be studied at Marshall College by one Dr. D. Marley.[2] In the 1940s, Indiana Jones' aviator friend Jock Lindsey went on a vacation along the Nile during which a skipper took Jock to see the Backside of Water firsthand at Schweitzer Falls.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
Schweitzer Falls is a fictional location from the Disneyland attraction Jungle Cruise where a faux waterfall was used to circulate the attraction's water while mixing it with brown dye to replicate the appearance of mud. The location was originally named after historic theologist Dr. Albert Schweitzer "who has done so much for the people of Africa" although this lore was later retconned.
When the Jungle Cruise took on a more comedic tone, cast members often altered the line to the site having been discovered by the fictional Dr. Albert Falls. In 2015, this was made part of the falls' official backstory with the opening of the Skipper Canteen at Walt Disney World.
