The Sheriff was the local law enforcement official in the small town of Moab in Utah, where Indiana Jones lived in 1912.

Biography[]

A member of the police[2] of Moab, Utah,[3] the Sheriff knew about the Jones family and Anna Mary Jones.[4] When Jones discovered treasure hunters looting the Cross of Coronado from a canyon, he sent his friend Herman to get the sheriff. When Jones managed to reach his house with the cross, Herman arrived, with the Sheriff and his deputy.[1]

The Sheriff, who took Fedora's word for it that the Cross was stolen from them by Jones, told Jones that if he returned the Cross to its rightful owners, they wouldn't press charges.[1] Jones was crushed to learn that the Sheriff actually believed them and was in cahoots with Fedora and Panama Hat and backed them up on it.[5][6] The Sheriff bid Jones farewell and left before Fedora gave Jones his hat.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The role of the Sheriff was portrayed by Marc Miles in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The script and movie credits refer to the character as Sheriff, though the character's actual name is not revealed.[1]

In Rob MacGregor's novelization, 1989 junior novelization and the Marvel Comics' comic book adaptation, the Sheriff makes a cruel comment about Anna Mary Jones turning on her grave if she discovered that her son Indiana committed theft.[5][7][4] In the junior novelization Indy also accuses him of beign in cahoots with Garth.[7]

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Read-Along Adventure, in the scene at the Jones residence, Indy and his father simply meet with the police and the fate of the Cross of Coronado is unaddressed.[2]
