"Shorty's sure earned his keep this time, glad I took him under my wing since I found him wandering the streets of Shanghai -- trying to pick my pocket. How could I blame him, though, with his parents when they bombed Shanghai and all."
Indiana Jones on Short Round[src]

Short Round's father was a steel plant foreman who fathered Wan Li, a Chinese pickpocket who eventually became the sidekick of the American archaeologist Indiana Jones.

Biography[]

A steel plant foreman, this man was married to a woman with whom he had a son[1] named Wan Li in 1926.[2] He and his family lived a comfortable life, but their times in abundance came unexpectedly to an end during January 1932,[1] where the whole family, minus Wan, was killed by a Japanese bombing raid on Shanghai, leaving Wan orphaned at a young age.[3]

Legacy[]

In 1936, as Wan rescued him with some finds he had uncovered from the Caribbean Sea's waters, Jones thanked to himself taking Li under his wing upon first meeting him trying to pickpocket him in Shaghai's streets, admitting to himself that he didn't blame the boy for trying to rob him given how he had lost his parents to the Shanghai's bombings.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

James Kahn's novelization of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom established Short Round as having at least a brother named Chu.[5] Whether Shorty's father is likewise Chu's father or not has yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm Ltd.
