Simon Katanga's predecessor was the captain of the Bantu Wind merchant ship back when Katanga started sailing as First Mate. However, Katanga's predecessor was mortally wounded in a gunfight during one smuggling run, prompting Katanga to take over control of the vessel by 1936.[2]
While the Bantu Wind's crew supported Katanga as their new captain and leader, Katanga's competitors embellished the story so others would believe on their claims that Katanga had actually murdered his predecessor as part of a mutiny supported by his crew of pirates and smugglers.[2]

- ↑ Raiders of the Lost Ark Sourcebook confirms that Simon Katanga's predecessor was killed prior to the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. As it's unknown when Katanga rose up to become captain of the Bantu Wind, he may have become captain in early 1936 before coming across Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood or even earlier.
