The Staff of Moses (also known as the Staff of Kings) was the staff Moses used to demonstrate God's power in the biblical account of Exodus. Moses held the Staff when parting the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to escape from Egypt. Later, Moses amazed his people by causing water to flow from a stone by striking the stone with this same rod. These deeds were said to have been acts of God working through Moses.
Indiana Jones discovered the staff in 1939, where it was hidden away in a Himalayan sanctuary. However, it was then stolen by Magnus Völler, eventually leading to a motorcycle chase between the two on the seafloor, as Magnus used the staff to part the waters as Moses had done centuries earlier. Indy managed to reaquire the staff (Magnus dying in the process) and escaped to a nearby island, where the staff, apparently acting of its own will, closed the waters, destroying Magnus's zeppplin and its Nazi crew. Shortly after, the staff turned into a serpant and slithered away. Indy made no attempt to reacquite it, remarking that it could take care of itself.
Eventually, the staff was reacquired and taken to Area 51, where it was housed in the same wherehouse that held The Ark of the Covenant.
