Susan Ryan was a student at Marshall College. She attended the Archaeology 101 class of Professor Indiana Jones, with whom she had a romantic involvement, and was with him at his home in 1936 when National Museum curator Marcus Brody arrived there to inform Jones that he would be going after the Ark of the Covenant.

Biography[]

In 1936, Susan Ryan was a student of Marshall College. She attended Professor Indiana Jones' Archaeology 101 class,[2] but Jones and Ryan were involved with each other physically.[1]

National Museum curator Marcus Brody caught her lingering outside one of Jones' classes on the day he arrived to tell him that government agents were awaiting him.[1] Susan had left by the time Jones came out of the classroom.[3]

As a professor, Jones had suggested revisions for Ryan's term paper on "Archeological Artifacts and Folklore".[2] Susan and Jones were together at the archaeologist's home when Marcus Brody arrived to tell Jones that the US Government had agreed on him being the man to recover the Ark of the Covenant from the Tanis digsite outside Cairo, Egypt before the Nazis did.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Despite her admiration and romantic interest for her professor, Indiana Jones,[1] Susan Ryan was far from an ideal student: as noted by Jones on his revisions to Susan's term paper where she had apparently learned the wrong lesson over the relationship between archaeology and folklore while studying Archaeology 101. Susan also handed her paper to Jones late.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Jones, Susan and Brody

Susan was portrayed by Pola Churchill in Raiders of the Lost Ark.[4]

The character's scenes were cut from the final picture,[4] though she can still briefly be seen at Marshall College when Marus Brody approaches Jones's classroom and looks back over his shoulder at the girl lingerng outside.[3]

Nevertheless, her scenes were included in Campbell Black's novelization,[1] and 2008's The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones later established as Susan's surname as Ryan.[2]
