Tarquin the Proud was the last of Rome's seven kings.
Biography[]
According to legend, during Tarquin's rule of Rome he was approached by the Cumaean Sibyl who was looking to sell her prophecies collected in nine books. When Tarquin declined, the Sibyl burned three of the set then made her offer again. She destroyed another third when rebuffed a second time before Tarquin finally relented and bought the remaining three.[2]
Tarquin was overthrown in 509 BC, which signaled the end of the Roman kingdom and the arrival of the Roman Republic.[1]
