The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

History[]

Existence[]

Built around 550 BC, the Temple of Artemis was the largest (110 meter by 55 meter) and perhaps most complex temple of ancient times. It was made entirely of marble except for its tile covered wooden roof. It was built to honor a nature goddess who eventually became as sociated with the Greek goddess Artemis during the Hellenistic period. It was burned by invaders in 356 BC and rebuilt. The Goths destroyed it again in 256 AD and it was never rebuilt.[1]

Legacy[]

Some pieces of the temple have been recovered in modern times.[1]
