General Tengtu Hok was a warlord based out of Shanghai, China who owned one half of the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra.
In 1936, Indiana Jones broke into the museum at Hok's palace to claim the piece for himself while the warlord was meeting with German agents also looking to gain access to Hok's collection.
Samurai in the general's service attacked Jones during his attempt to take the artifact and a gong sounded the alarm. Hok and the Germans rushed to the museum but Hok took matters into his own hands and locked the Germans outside while arming himself with a Thompson submachine gun. Hok sprayed his museum with bullets but Jones was able to take the headpiece section and escaped through a window, using the gong that had alerted Hok to his presence as a shield.
Behind the scenes
Tengtu Hok was part of a sequence originally scripted and storyboarded for Raiders of the Lost Ark that went unused in the final product. While some of the elements would later be recycled for the Club Obi Wan scenes in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, such as a large rolling gong protecting Indiana Jones from machine gun fire, Tengtu Hok wasn't kept.
However, the idea of a Chinese warlord in possession of the Staff of Ra headpiece was intended to be resurrected for the plot of comic Indiana Jones and the Lost Horizon in which Jones and his mentor, Abner Ravenwood, would recover the piece in Tibet. The story went unproduced when Dark Horse Comics ended the Indiana Jones comic line.
