Behind the scenes[]
- "It went like this: I wrote the plot, submitted it to LucasFilm for approval. It was approved. Drew the pictures, likewise submitted, likewise approved. Wrote the script, submitted it -- she asked for plot changes. Er, no, we said -- that was two steps ago. No, she said, want plot changes!! And when the first issue was finally complete, she decided she liked the plot I'd submitted months earlier for the third issue even better, and wanted that to be the first issue. We talked her out of that one. After two issues of this insanity, I gave up the ghost."
- ―John Byrne[src]
During development of the first issues of The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones comic book series by Marvel Comics, John Byrne proposed a story for the third issue that he presented months ago before he finished the first part for the premiere "The Ikons of Ikammanen" two-parter story. However, by that point, an unnamed Lucasfilm Ltd. liason, who had no experience in the turnaround time for comic books, decided to have Byrne's story for the third issue become the series premiere in spite of the premiere issue already being done. While Marvel talked the liason out of this, Byrne quit the series after finishing the second part of the premiere due to being unable to deal with the her.[1] As such, Denny O'Neil came up with "The Devil's Cradle" story in its place.[2] Gene Day was brought in to pencil the issue due to editor Louise Simonson wanting to pencil the series along with Marvel's Star Wars, offers that Day agreed when Jim Shooter called him to see if he was interested due to being a fan of both the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises.[3] Danny Bulanadi was brought in by Simonson to ink the issue due to his reputation as a fast worker, being supposed to be a fill-in inker until the series' many pencillers secured the job as his.[4]
