The Girl from Ipanema was a hit bossa nova & jazz song in the 1960s. It was written in Brazil in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. Norman Gimbel later wrote English lyrics. A 1965 recording by Stan Getz, featuring the vocal debut of Astrud Gilberto, became a worldwide hit. It later became the prime example of easy listening elevator music.

In 1969, the song played softly in the background in the Archaeology Office of Hunter College during the retirement party of Professor Henry Jones, Jr..
