Behind the scenes[]

John Byrne was brought in as writer and artist for The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones comic book series. However, two issues into the run, he quit the book following frustrations with the editorial process which included an unnamed Lucasfilm Ltd. liaison with Marvel Comics who, not appreciating the turnaround time in the comics business, wanted the proposed third issue to become the since-completed premiere issue instead.[1]

As Byrne left the book early,[1] the released third issue was an entirely different story called "The Devil's Cradle" by Denny O'Neil,[3] who had completed the scripting for the previous issue.[4] The Readers of the Lost Ark letters section of the seventh issue would cite Byrne's exit from the series as having been from being too busy with writing other Marvel lines such as Fantastic Four, The Thing and the recently launched Alpha Flight comic book series.[5]

Pin-up art showcasing "The Sentinel" by Bryne, inked by Terry Austin, was included in Marvel Movie Spotlight Featuring Raiders of the Lost Ark 1 which collected the three-issue run of Marvel's Raiders of the Lost Ark comic adaptation along with an advert for the ongoing Further Adventures book.[6] The original pencil work for the pin-up art was eventually included in The Complete Making of Indiana Jones.[2]
