The Walt Disney Company (commonly known as Disney) is an international multimedia conglomerate, originally founded as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923 by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Disney, which became the intellectual property owner of the Indiana Jones franchise following its acquisition of Lucasfilm Ltd. in 2012. The Walt Disney Company is also the corporate parent of ABC, Marvel Comics, 20th Century Fox, and Freeform (the television network once known as The Family Channel). The character of Mickey Mouse is Disney's primary mascot for promotional purposes.

Disney already had an extensive affiliation with the franchise prior to purchasing Lucasfilm, mainly through the inclusion of dedicated attractions at its theme parks:

To promote the opening of Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland in 1995, Disney produced Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye as the halftime show for Super Bowl XXIX along with airing The Making of Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure. Disneyland similarly promoted the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008 with the Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries.

Features connected to Indiana Jones also formed part of The Great Movie Ride and Raiders of the Lost Jedi Temple of Doom: A Fan Film of Epic Proportions at Disney's Hollywood Studios, while various collectible items and other memorabilia related to the franchise have been offered as Disney parks exclusives as well as through the Vinylmation series of Disney-produced figures.

Proposed Disney attractions based on the franchise which did not ultimately come to fruition include Indiana Jones and the Lost Expedition, Young Indiana Jones and the Adventure Spectacular at Disneyland and Indiana Jones Land at Disneyland Paris.
