- "A century ago when the British raided this temple and butchered my people, a loyal priest hid the last two stones down here in the catacombs."
- ―Mola Ram[src]
A loyal Thuggee priest active in the first half of the 19th century hid two of the five Sankara Stones in the depths below Pankot Palace.
Biography[]
Service to the Thuggees[]
According to a legend,[2] when the original Temple of Doom was destroyed in 1828 during the violent suppression of the Thuggee cult,[3] resulting in the deaths of more than 300 Thuggee priests,[4] a loyal survivor hid the last two Sankara Stones deep in the catacombs[1] under the temple[4] while the British were raiding it.[1]
Legacy[]
The actions of the priest were later revealed to Indiana Jones by Thuggee leader Mola Ram in 1935.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: A Tale of High Adventure,[5] instead of mentioning one priest,[1] the character is referred in the plural, indicating that "loyal priests" hid the Sankara Stones.[5] Also while the majority of Temple of Doom medias indicated that the preist was a full fledged Thuggee, the TSR, Inc. module described him as a Vishnu priest.[2]
