The Thule Society – known in its native German as Thule Gesselschaft and as the Agents of the Luminous Lodge of the Vril – which also went by the name of one of its member groups, the Luminous Lodge of the Vril, was a secret society founded in Bavaria in the wake of World War I.

History[]

Named after a folkloric island in the north Atlantic Ocean, the Thule Society was established by members of the Bavarian upper class as an occultist study group dedicated to, among other things, the Norse myths. Their interests, including anti-Communist and anti-semitic beliefs, gained traction with German nationalists to the extent that by the 1920s the German Workers Party had been established and subsequently reorganized by Adolf Hitler as the Nazis.

By 1934, the Thule Society was closing in on the location of Ultima Thule, a realm beneath the Earth's crust accessible via portal in the Arctic, and its source of all but invincibility bestowing Vril reputed to be the origin of the so-called Nazi master race. A specialist squad of Society Schutzstaffel agents led by Rudolf Reingold ran down Arctic explorer Evelyn Briggs Baldwin in Washington DC to acquire the lapis exilis, the Thule Stone, in his possession but Baldwin managed to slip away. He fled to the home of Indiana Jones, entrusting the object to the archaeologist before succumbing to his injuries.
